Green Job/Career Workshops

By Jim Cassio, Green Careers Author and Trainer

These days, green jobs and careers are attractive to increasing numbers of people who want meaningful work that matches their values. According to a recent survey, 80 percent of young people are interested in securing a job that impacts the environment in a positive way, and over 90 percent give preference to working for an eco-friendly employer. Many middle aged and older workers are also interested in switching to green or greener jobs as they seek greater career satisfaction. Others are simply motivated to seek green jobs based on the employment opportunities they anticipate as a result of millions of dollars in economic stimulus money being invested in specific industries and activities in order to create millions of new green jobs and reduce our carbon emissions.

Whatever the motivation for this swell of interest in green jobs/careers, it is also clear that most people have a very limited understanding of what is a green job or career, where they are, and how to get one. Most people, including many so-called experts, have concluded that green jobs are those found in renewable energy and energy efficiency industries. And while it is true that green jobs are found in those two industries, it is also true that green jobs can be found in virtually all industries if you know where and how to look for them.

About the Green Job/Career Workshops

My Green Job and Career Workshops are designed for organizations who wish to contract with me to provide standard or customized workshop training to the organization's staff, management, customers, clients or stakeholders. The sponsoring organization is typically responsible for coordinating the workshop(s) and providing both the workshop facility/space and the workshop participants, while I prepare and deliver the content.

A workshop audience can be a mixed group (i.e. anyone interested in learning more about green jobs/careers) or a specific group. Specific groups are typically:

  • career explorers and jobs seekers

  • career counselors and career development professionals

  • workforce and economic development professionals

The objective of all my Green Job/Career Workshops is to provide both awareness and insight into the new world of green jobs and careers, including definitions, statistics, trends, and resources. Workshop participants come away with a much improved understanding of green jobs/careers and the wide variety of industries and career fields that support green jobs. Workshop participants receive complimentary copies of my latest book, Green Careers: Choosing Work for a Sustainable Future (with co-author Alice Rush).

Typical Workshop Outline

  1. What is a green job?

  2. How do you identify green jobs?

  3. What is sustainability?

  4. What is a sustainable organization or a green business?

  5. Where are the green jobs and in what industries?

  6. How many green jobs are there?

  7. What types of occupations can lead to green jobs?

  8. What are the best resources for career explorers?

  9. What are the best resources for job seekers?

  10. How do you make your current job/employer greener?

  11. Where are the opportunities for green entrepreneurs?

  12. Optional: Workforce and economic development strategies for creating green jobs

Workshop Program Choices

Basic Training Workshop: 90 minute interactive presentation – designed to provide a basic understanding of the key workshop subjects 1-9.
Minimum/Maximum Group Size: This workshop can be done with any size group.
Cost: The cost of the basic training workshop can be estimated at $70 per participant (includes complimentary book), plus 'business class' travel expenses for the trainer, and is based on a minimum of 20 participants (even if the workshop is actually done for fewer than 20 participants). So the minimum charge for this workshop would be $1,400 (plus travel) for a group of up to 20 participants. For each additional workshop participant, the cost increases by $70. Ask about discounts for large groups of 100 or more.

Half-Day Training Workshop: 4 hour interactive workshop – designed to provide an intermediate understanding of the key workshop subjects 1-11, plus a focus on developing a next steps/action plan.
Minimum/Maximum Group Size: 20-50 (preferred)
Cost: The cost of the half-day training workshop can be estimated at $100 per participant (includes complimentary book), plus 'business class' travel expenses for the trainer, and is based on a minimum of 20 participants (even if the workshop is actually done for fewer than 20 participants). So the minimum charge for this workshop would be $2,000 (plus travel) for a group of up to 20 participants. For each additional workshop participant, the cost increases by $100.

All-Day Training Workshop: 7 hour interactive workshop – designed to provide an advanced understanding of the key workshop subjects 1-11, plus a focus on developing a next steps/action plan.
Minimum/Maximum Group Size: 20-50 (preferred)
Cost: The cost of the all-day training workshop can be estimated at $125 per participant (includes complimentary book), plus 'business class' travel expenses for the trainer, and is based on a minimum of 20 participants (even if the workshop is actually done for fewer than 20 participants). So the minimum charge for this workshop would be $2,500 (plus travel) for a group of up to 20 participants. For each additional workshop participant, the cost increases by $125.

Options

Depending on the audience, I often recommend including a panel discussion with 4-6 green industry representatives who can talk first-hand about the job/career opportunities in their industries and/or professions. I can help the sponsoring organization identify potential panelists, but it is typically up to the sponsoring organization to invite and secure the participation of the panelists, and then I coordinate with the panelists to determine their individual questions or topics of discussion. I also typically moderate the panel discussions, although this is not a requirement. Such a panel can range from 1-2 hours in length.
