Industry Research

Industry research involves designing and conducting a study to learn about the workforce needs and characteristics of employers in targeted industries within a given geographical area. Often called industry cluster studies, industry research can take many forms, but generally provides the following type of information:

  • Number of current employers

  • Number of current jobs/workers

  • Types of jobs - e.g. FT, PT, on-call and temp

  • Change in employment level in recent year(s), including job growth rates

  • Expected change in employment level for specified outlook period

  • Types of jobs affected by employment changes

  • Reasons for any planned reductions in the current workforce

  • Typical recruitment practices

  • Degree of difficulty in finding qualified job candidates

  • Types of jobs that are consistently difficult to fill

Workforce Gap Analysis
An option when conducting an industry study is to take selected data from the study and combine with already-existing employment statistics to conduct a Workforce Gap Analysis in which occupations are evaluated with regard to occupational demand and projected workforce gaps. See the Napa Hospitality! report for an example of a Workforce Gap Analysis.
